Is there a right time to declare a disaster or put Agility on alert?

When’s the right time to initiate a response from Agility? I understand I should put them on “alert” when we begin thinking about a recovery, but are there any concrete factors that determine when to actually declare a disaster?I’m scared that we’ll be waiting around weighing all the pros and cons and, eventually, it’ll be too late. Then again, if it’s only for a generator or server, the benefit may outweigh the cost of a recovery.

We experienced a severe snow storm and our power went out as a result. Before we even thought about what to do, I received a call on my cell from Agility checking in to make sure we were OK. Apparently they tried our office and it just rang and rang.

The person we spoke with was very pleasant and gave us a few options to consider, just in case power wasn’t restored. Luckily, the power came back on a few hours later. Regardless, we were impressed to receive a call from Agility.

In my planning process, I determine how long my office can be without a service before we call in Agility. Keep in mind that some Agility services need 36-48 hour turnaround time.

For example, our voice and data T-1 went down today because of a widespread fiber-optic problem. For today, I just put Agility on alert. If I were to be down over 24-48 hours, I would possibly have them dispatch a satellite solution for voice and data.
